Coffee, the worst thing for your teeth?

Of course coffee is a terrible enemy to your teeth, but why?

Enamel, the tough outer shell that protects the other layers of your teeth, is lined with microscopic cavities. When food and liquids get trapped in these cavities, they form extrinsic stains, which simply means that only the outer layer of your teeth is discolored. But the longer these particles remain in these cavities, the more they begin to affect the other layers of the tooth. The more you drink coffee without doing anything to remove it, the deeper the stains penetrate. These are called intrinsic stains and are much harder to get rid of.

3 tips to protect your white teeth from coffee

Keep your teeth safe from discoloration without giving up your passion for coffee. Below are 3 tips to protect your teeth from stains from your coffee.

1 - Mix baking soda and hydrogen peroxide.

Make your own whitening paste by mixing a little baking soda and hydrogen peroxide (this is what your dentist uses to whiten your teeth). The paste should be quite liquid. If it's too granular, you've put too much baking soda in it - be careful, you may scratch the enamel on your teeth.

2 - Add milk to your coffee.

A little bit of milk can lessen the effects of coffee. A recent study in the International Journal of Dental Hygiene showed that casein, the main protein in milk, can literally bind to the tannins in tea (those bitter-tasting particles that leave a residue on teeth) and prevent stains. Ava Show, who led the study, even claims it works even better than whitening toothpastes. Since coffee also contains some tannin, coffee drinkers will be better off mixing it with a little milk. For best results, use a high-fat milk; soy milk will be ineffective.
